Free event: SHELTER
Location: National Gallery of Victoria (forecourt) 180 St
Kilda Road
Dates: 28 September to 10 October, 11am to 11pm daily
Shelter is a collaboration between leading architect Sean
Godsell, The Artful Dodgers Studio, the Brotherhood of St
Laurence and Melbourne Fringe. Shelter is a free Melbourne
Fringe produced event as part of this year’s Melbourne
Fringe Festival.
In this large-scale public exhibition located on the NGV International
forecourt Shelter combines architecture, design, digital media,
photography and film in an unmistakable structure designed
by Sean Godsell. Built upon the wisdom and experience of established
Melbourne artists and marginalised young and elderly people,
Shelter will surprise you with it’s response to ideas
of ‘home’ and what it represents to those living
on the fringe of society. The artwork and digital design exhibited
within the structure changes throughout the exhibition.
Melbourne Fringe believes that festivals and the arts have
the power and responsibility to create innovative, compelling
events that inspire discussion around social issues by presenting
high profile, thought provoking artworks throughout the festival.
Shelter responds to the issues surrounding homelessness, social
isolation and affordable housing.
As part of the Shelter project, Melbourne Fringe will hold
two forums at NGV International based on themes of home and
homelessness and the collaborative process undertaken to produce
Shelter.
