In Fringe Furniture

Registrations to take part in Fringe Furniture are now open

Attention: Makers of furniture, lighting, homewares, jewellery and genre-defying non-functional objects – registrations to be part of Fringe Furniture 32 are now open. Our Open Access, boundary-pushing exhibition of cutting-edge design will once again be held at the stunning Abbotsford Convent from 13 – 30 September.

Fringe Furniture is a standout showcase of market ready and experimental design and has provided a platform for artists and designers to exhibit their work for 32 years, making it one of the longest (and we think most beloved) design events in Australia.

As an open-access exhibition, every work submitted is accepted (but you still need to check out our Registration Info Pack for Ts & Cs) and participation is open to people of any experience level – whether you’ve just designed your first piece or you’re a pro who just needs the right excuse to make something experimental, edgy and just a little left of centre.

What can I submit?

Anything design-related, quite literally.  We want your furniture, lighting, industrial design, homewares, jewellery, and installation art works. Pushing form is what Fringe Furniture is all about.

Your piece can be schmick and market-ready, something you made as part of your course, an existing work you completed recently, or a project you haven’t even started yet.  If you don’t have all the details (dimensions, photo, description) ready yet, don’t worry – just give us all the info you’ve got and keep us updated as your piece develops.

If you need some help to get the creative juices flowing, you can make a piece in response to our 2018 artist provocation – The Games We Play. More info here.

How do I register?

Fringe Furniture for Gender Equality

There’s a gender pay gap across Australia, which means that men are paid more than other genders to do the same work – and the design sector is no exception.

Fringe Furniture is making a commitment to actively supporting gender equality in the design sector so that female identifying and non-binary designers won’t continue to be under-represented in the design industry.

The Naomi Milgrom Foundation is helping Melbourne Fringe to help female-identifying and non-binary designers by subsidising registrations for these communities by 15.3% – which is the gender pay gap in Australia.  We reckon that’s only fair.

  • Unsubsidised registrations of $105 full and $85 concession are recommended for male-identifying designers.
  • Subsidised registrations (by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation) of $88.94 full and $72 concession are 15.3% less and are recommended for female-identifying and non-binary designers.

At Melbourne Fringe, we know gender is a construct, but it’s one that leads to discrimination and privilege for some.  So it’s up to you. We trust you to pick the price that is fairest. More info here.
