Melbourne's Heritage Venue for Promoters, Performers & Public Events
Carlton CBD · No venue hire fee · Up to 250 guests · 3am licence · Full PA & stage includedYour Event. Your Room. Your Crowd.
Fringe Common Rooms is one of Melbourne's most distinctive event venues, a 164-year-old heritage ballroom inside the iconic Victorian Trades Hall, five minutes from the CBD. We work with independent promoters, musicians, comedians, cabaret producers, and community collectives to bring public events to life in a space that already has the vibe, the infrastructure and the credibility.
We don't lock you into restrictive packages. Most venues charge you before anyone walks through the door. We don't. Instead we work on a minimum bar spend model: an agreed amount your crowd spends at the bar on the night, confirmed at booking based on your guest count and night of the week. No venue hire fee on top, no packages you don't need.
Who hires Fringe Common Rooms for Public Events?
DJ & club night promoters
A late-night license until 3am, a full professional PA system, a built-in disco ball, and a room that looks like nowhere else in Melbourne. As the home of Club Fringe during Melbourne Fringe Festival, the Ballroom knows how to hold a proper night out. Whether you're launching a new club night or bringing a well-established series to a new home, Fringe Common Rooms has earned its reputation.
Band showcases & album launches
The Ballroom has a professional stage with an accessible wheelchair lift, full lighting rig, and a sound system built for live performance. It's the kind of room that makes a band's album launch feel like a moment, not just a gig. We've hosted everything from intimate acoustic sets to full band performances, and we can help connect you with experienced tech staff and photographers if you need them.
Comedy & cabaret productions
Fringe Common Rooms was built for live performance. The Ballroom's high vaulted ceilings, heritage architecture, and flexible cabaret-style seating create the ideal setting for comedy nights, cabaret shows, drag performances, and anything in between. The stage is accessible, the sightlines are excellent, and the Lounge provides a perfect green room or private bar space for your talent.
Community events & collectives
We're an inclusive, culturally safe space where every kind of public event is welcome. Fringe Common Rooms is run by Melbourne Fringe and we share those values: accessibility, diversity, inclusivity and a genuine love of live culture. If you're running a benefit night, a community fundraiser, or a cultural celebration, you'll find a team ready and waiting to help you pull it off.
Book Launches, Film Screenings & Cultural Events
A heritage ballroom inside one of Melbourne's most storied buildings is a hard setting to beat for a book launch, film screening, panel discussion, or industry event. The Ballroom seats 114 theatre-style or reconfigures for a standing reception, the Lounge works as a breakout or pre-event drinks space, and the 5k laser projector handles AV without needing a separate hire. It's the kind of room that gives your event gravitas before a single word is spoken.

How Pricing Works
We offer two pricing models to support different types of events. Our Venue Sales & Events Coordinator will work with you to find the best fit.
Model 1: Minimum bar spend
Best for: promoters who want to keep upfront costs low.
How it works: You commit to a minimum spend behind the bar, confirmed at booking based on your guest count and day of the week. If your crowd meets or exceeds that minimum on the night, you pay $0 for venue hire. If bar sales fall short, you pay the difference. Your deposit paid at booking is credited toward your bar minimum.
Model 2: Flat Venue Hire
Best for: promoters who want cost certainty upfront
How it works: You pay a set fee for the venue, plus any applicable labour costs. The rate varies based on day of the week, hire duration, and whether the bar is open. The Venue Sales & Events Coordiantor will provide a custom quote based on your specific event.
