Her Story - of the Blues

Lead performer Marie-Thérèse wears a white flapper dress with 1920's style white head band, looking at her hands whilst playing piano. On the stage is a guitar and fold-back speaker. The stage is lit with a blue wash and fairy lights dripping down the back wall. An award with laurels consumes the top right corner of the image, with the words - 'ADELAIDE FRINGE WEEKLY AWARD WINNER 2025'
Darcy Raja Segaran
Watercolour painting of a person with their back to the viewer, walking away, carrying a suitcase in each hand and a guitar on their back, facing a horizon of hills ahead, as if embarking upon a long journey. In the far-right corner of the picture, a cityscape in the distance, beckons with bright lights. The bottom of the picture is framed by a silhouette of onlookers in the shadows, watching the departure.

Lead performer Marie-Thérèse wears a white top hat with white tuxedo jacket over a 1920's flapper dress, sitting at an upright piano with a microphone, indicating she has been singing. Her head is turned to the left, presumedly towards the audience, whilst her hands remain on the piano, presumedly playing music.

Music of the trailblazing women who pioneered the blues, conceived rock & pop – then got– forgotten!

Returning the spotlight to the source, Mari-Trees embarks upon a sonic mission to restore recognition - where due.

Presenting music of the trailblazing women who pioneered the blues, conceived rock & pop, and were then - promptly forgotten!

Music from the Mississippi Delta - to the clubs of Harlem - to your local Petrol Station.
This story is contextualised within the current Australian imperative for truth telling and embracing the humble art of acknowledgment.
Dismantling the narrative that pedestals white patriarchy, 'Her Story' seeks to provide an alternative, albeit more accurate story, illuminating some of the key players of the blues, who happened to be Female, predominantly Black, and dominantly Queer – bold deviations from the dominant discourse.

Enraged by erasure, capitalist greed and colonial continuity, this one-woman-warrior determines to dismantle the shelves of history, revealing the genesis of rock music, in the legacy of these early blues women. Featuring Mari-Trees on all instruments. Tap, clap, hum and sing along!

'Her Story' invites audiences to be curious, to question our standards and to consider - what else has been 'conveniently' swept under the carpet?!

"This was a must see show. We were amazed and awed by her music and the stories she wove through her performance" - Carol, D. Adelaide Fringe Punter, 2025.

"One woman truncated herstory of women in the blues. Mari-Trees picks a mean steel guitar and tells a good story in song. Spoiler alert she manages 4 costume changes on stage in one hour. That is versatility. Recommended" - Stuart C, Adelaide Fringe Punter, 2025.
