Messy and Meaningful: Shaping an Inclusive Future of Design

A group of people gather inside a gallery space, engaging in conversation and viewing an artwork. Two people are in focus—one in a colourful striped sweater pointing animatedly at something off-frame, while the other, dressed in a dark suit, looks on with interest. Behind them is a large textile or mixed-media piece on display, and other guests are partially visible in the foreground, contributing to the lively atmosphere.

A stylised chair installation in soft blue tones, resembling a medical recliner with playful, rounded design features. An IV stand holds a matching blue fluid bag, and a retro orange phone handset rests on a side unit marked with a "+1" symbol and a thumbs-up icon. The scene is set against a white curtain backdrop with another quirky orange chair visible in the background.

Two people stand closely together in a gallery space, gazing up in awe at a large, sculptural circular light fixture suspended above them. The installation is made of curved wooden elements and emits a soft glow. Other visitors are visible in the background, including one taking a photo, all surrounded by contemporary design objects displayed in a softly lit room.

Design Fringe is ready for a redesign. Join the conversation helping to shape its bold new future.

Where has Design Fringe been - and where is it going?

Join us for a lively, reflective, and forward-looking conversation that explores the evolving identity of our Design Fringe program. We’ll be bringing together past participants, sector leaders, and passionate design voices to unpack the legacy of this iconic program and imagine what it could become.

As we reflect on decades of creative risk-taking and community building, from the program’s origins as Fringe Furniture to its more recent reinvigoration as Design Fringe, we’ll also ask: what needs to change? What should be preserved, and what should be reimagined entirely? As we stand on the dawn of a new chapter in partnership with RMIT, now is the time to collectively shape the future of Design Fringe.

Expect an honest look back at the history of Design Fringe and its provocations, and a sector-led discussion about the role of design in shaping inclusive futures. Anticipate asking big questions about accessibility, sustainability, equity, and open access frameworks. Who gets to take up space in design? What could Design Fringe look like as a future platform of inclusive and experimental design practice?

We’re not shying away from the messy and the meaningful. Design Fringe is changing shape. Come be a part of what it looks like next.
