Silent Hand Catches Silver Bell - Speak Percussion 25th Anniversary Exhibition

This dimly lit, wide shot shows two young women seated opposite each other at a long, black-draped table on a stage. Both women, facing inward, are dressed in dark clothing, with their hair pulled back, and each has a microphone positioned in front of them. Behind them, a bright, horizontal bar of light illuminates a large grey screen, creating a stark contrast with the dark foreground and highlighting their silhouettes.

A close-up blurred shot that features a single, round bell, appearing to be made of a metallic or iridescent material. The bell is in the centre of the image against a soft, light grey background that darkens towards the top. The bell's smooth, reflective surface captures subtle light, highlighting its contours and suggesting its rounded shape. The camera angle is straightforward, placing the bell in the lower-middle right of the frame, with gentle lighting creating a smooth transition in the background.

This wide, dimly lit shot features three people seated behind a large, illuminated triangular structure made of neon lights, creating a captivating focal point on a dark stage. From left to right, a man in a white shirt and tie, a woman in a grey top, and another woman in a striped top are each seated in front of their own music stands or screens, with various cables and equipment visible on the floor. The bright, geometric light sculpture contrasts sharply with the dark background, emphasizing the performers and their setup.

An exhibition celebrating 25 years of radical sonic invention by Speak Percussion.

Speak Percussion has redefined the sound and scope of percussion in the 21st century. Now, after a quarter-century of avant-garde, boundary-defying experimentation, the Melbourne-based organisation marks its anniversary with Silent Hand Catches Silver Bell — a major exhibition at the Grainger Museum.

This immersive exhibition brings audiences face-to-face with custom-built instruments, striking installations, and archival materials that reveal the scale and audacity of Speak Percussion’s practice. It offers a rare window into the ensemble’s post-instrumental approach — where sound, object, space and concept intersect to create genre-breaking work.

From large-scale performances featuring hundreds of musicians to intimate collaborations with chefs, architects and space scientists, Speak’s extraordinarily diverse body of work has spanned disciplines and traversed continents. Highlights include: Polar Force, Atlas of the Sky, A wave and waves, Fluorophone, Anicca, Pigeons, Assembly Operation and collaborations with the Grainger Museum — each showcasing the ensemble’s visionary scope.

Also featured are contributions from some of the most compelling voices in contemporary music and performance, including Eugene Ughetti, Kaylie Melville, Matthias Schack-Arnott, Liza Lim, Philip Samartzis, Michael Pisaro, Simon Løffler, Clare Britton and Thomas Meadowcroft.

Explore the sounds, images and ideas that have shaped Speak Percussion’s evolution into one of the world’s most innovative musical forces.
