The Subplot: A hyperfixation on the Titan submersible (1)

In the foreground, a small model of a deep-sea submersible rests on a white ledge - the words “OceanGate Titan” are just visible on its body. In the background, a young, white woman with curly brown hair is peeking up to look at it, her eyes lit up in excitement.

A deep-dive exploration of sub, sea, and self amongst a tragedy of Titanic proportions.

In June 2023, the world stopped for five days when a manned submersible en route to the Titanic wreckage went missing in the North Atlantic Ocean. After search and rescue operations were deployed and oxygen countdowns expired, the submersible ‘Titan’ imploded with five souls aboard. The world resumed, and the news cycle continued – but not for Sophie. She has thought about it every single day.
Since that doomed day, she has immersed herself in the disaster – studying the US Coast Guard’s public hearing, pouring over redacted documents, articles, books, documentaries, and podcasts, until it eventually consumes every part of her life.
This is a true story about hubris and mortality, and one girl’s voyage from the depths of monotropism to euphoric, autistic joy. It is a deep-sea descent into hyperfixation; an exploration of sea, sub, and self, and how sometimes, it takes getting lost at sea for you to find yourself.

This is a comedy; a solo storytelling deep-sea odyssey of titanic proportions. Get in, babes, we’re going to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean.
