The Winner Takes It All: Exhibition

A performer with long brunette hair walks next to a swimming pool, wearing a short silver dress and over-the-knee silver boots. There is a lifeguard out of focus, smiling and standing behind them, with one foot resting on the edge of the swimming pool.

The performer on the left is dressed in a fully bright red sequinned outfit and with royal blue sequinned boxing gloves, helmet and briefs, their right hand is raised with a victory fist. The performer on the right is wearing a silver cricket outfit with cricket leg pads on, with a cricket bat in their left hand. They are both smiling.

Showcasing photographs from the 2024 Melbourne Fringe participatory project, The Winner Takes It All by The Huxleys.

Growing up in a sports-crazed nation is often a challenge for those of us at odds with athleticism, coordination or even motion. In last year's Melbourne Fringe Festival, the Winner Takes It All was an participatory art event that allowed anyone to be a sporting star, a wild spectator or anything in between. In a country where sport constantly overshadows art, this was a way to put the art into the sport!

With a special focus on the LGBTQIA+ community, we invited Melbourne to be part of a large scale photographic series exploring the many ways we struggle and succeed to perform ‘sport’. Part performance, part art happening. This was a unique community event for anyone who loathes or loves the ‘art’ of sport.

Now, this outdoor exhibition features the extraordinary photographs from the project, curated and created by the Huxleys, to share the joyous, the ridiculous and the sublime.
