Wasteworlds: Recovery

A young child stands confidently on a makeshift runway, hands on hips, wearing a striped red shirt, heart-print pants, and a headpiece made of hats and shoes. Their expression is proud and playful. In the background, another small child watches while adults sit along the runway edges, smiling.

A person sits cross-legged on a bench, dressed in a dramatic magenta costume made from textured fabric, with a large head wrap and a soft, box-like mask covering their eyes. They wear mismatched socks and pink Crocs. Behind them is a pink building and some greenery, creating a surreal, theatrical contrast.

A group of adults and a child pose in a colourful, makeshift fashion scene, wearing outfits created from scraps of fabric, old clothes, and costume pieces. Some strike confident poses, while others smile or interact casually. The backdrop is layered with hanging textiles, and the floor is strewn with clothing waste. The mood is vibrant, playful, and theatrical.

A sensory-friendly space to rest and reflect inside the quiet remains of Wasteworlds.

The runway has cooled, the safety pins have settled, and the world (probably) hasn’t ended.

Join us for a soft landing on the final day of Wasteworlds. This free, four-hour, drop-in session is a chance to slow down, explore the installation at your own pace, and simply be. Touch the textiles. Lounge in the rubble. Gently play among the remains of the week’s fashion chaos.

This is a sensory-friendly, no-pressure space designed for rest, reflection, and soft engagement. There are no performances, no loud sounds, and no expectation to participate. Bring your device and headphones to listen to pre-recorded poets describing the space.

To support immunocompromised community members, we ask that masks be worn in the space between 11am and 1pm.

Come solo or with friends. Stay for five minutes or all afternoon. The catwalk may be quiet—but the world of Wasteworlds is still very much alive.
